Dearborn Public Schools launch groundbreaking ‘Iftar’ meal initiative for students during Ramadan

DEARBORN, Mich. – In a revolutionary initiative, DEARBORN public schools offer IFTAR meals to students during the sacred month of Ramadan.

This marks the first time that the district provided meals specifically for this period, reflecting its commitment to inclusiveness and cultural sensitivity.

The Superintendent, Dr. Glenn Maleyko, announced: “For the first time, the public schools in Dearborn offer meals during the month of Ramadan to students.”

The initiative meets the needs of the large Muslim student population in the district, which includes more than half of the student body.

Ramadan is a sacred moment for Muslims. It’s a month of sunshine sunset.

Students who observe fasting do not participate in the regular lunch period during this period. To accommodate these students, the district will distribute bags of bags that can be brought home and consumed after sunset.

Emi Kreste, Director of Food Services for DEARBORN Public Schools, said: “It was an opportunity for students who cannot eat at school. And now they can take meals at home and eat them with their family in their time that they fast. »»

The students of Dearborn High School expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting that it makes them feel included and respected.

“We have made sure to offer stable meals, so that students can bring it home at the end of the school day,” said Courtney Burrows, principal director of food services for the district food management partner.

Meals will be on a bicycle daily to provide a variety.

For students wishing to access these meals, the process is simple.

“Simply pass a special line that we have created here at the cafeteria of all our schools. Simply provide their name or surname in the register, and they will be able to take a bag with a stable shelf, “said Kreste.

The Ramadan meal option will be available for college and high school students throughout March, until the spring vacation.

This initiative supports the religious practices of students and promotes a feeling of community and belongs to the school district.
